They had to deal with hunger, exposure, unhygienic, bad climate, poor clothing, and boredom. They have to wake up at dawn to begin their day. The volunteers in the Civil War were young men and older men were given specialized roles or became officers.  Diseases and infections included scarlet fever, malaria, measles, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, pox, pneumonia, mumps and whooping cough.
