Ponyboy is brave for a couple of different reasons:
He stands by Johnny after he kills the soc, and stays with him all the way through until when johnny dies in the end. He is brave this way because he stands by his friends through the good and the bad. That is a great charecteristic for anyone to have.
He is also brave because he saved the kids from burning inside the old church. This is the biggest reason for him being brave
The last reason is that he went to fight in the rumble, even though he didnt feel well. He knew that his friends needed him, and he stood by them, once again showing his great characteristic of loyalty to his friends.

Answer:
Pony is very brave in many different sections for the book, but I am focusing on one of the earlier moments:
At the park with Johnny, Pony sticks up for the themselves, and the greasers even, when the socs insult them. Ponyboy knows that the socs can beat him up at any second, but instead he sticks up for himself and the greasers.
