Further Explanation
Bacon's Rebellion took place in Jamestown, VA in 1676. Nathaniel Bacon, an upper class white man, and William Berkeley, Virginia's Governor did not agree on issues regarding the Native Americans. They actually did not agree on much and often were looking to antagonize each other. Bacon formed his own militia to take care of what he considered the problem with Native Americans.
Bacon's militia was formed with both poor white indentured servants and black slaves. During the rebellion, the militia overtook Jamestown and burnt it to the ground. The strength of the indentured servants and slaves working together inspired other small rebellions and made wealthy landowners fearful.
In order to stop these rebellions, lawmakers made clear distinctions between poor white indentured servants and farmers and black slaves. The white men were given some rights while black men were not. This then created a division between the two groups.
Bacon's rebellion is often credited as an inciting event to the government's involvement in defining whites and blacks as different and not equal.
