The first step is to identify the length of the carbon chain. As you can see, the name ends in pentane, therefore we know it has 5 carbons in the main chain.

Second, you can see that the substituent is methyl (CH₃), but there are 4 methyl groups because it is called tetra-methyl (tetra = four).

Lastly, the numbers indicate the carbon within the chain where the methyl groups are located. Two in the second carbon, two in the fourth carbon.
