Cognitive development is basically the study of childhood psychological and neurological development. In particular, cognitive development is obtained based on the level of conception, perception, processing of information, and language as the measure of brain development.
Cognitive development advances with age as human consciousness and perception of the world increases from infancy to childhood to adolescence. Language, morals, memory and reasoning are the characteristics of the different stages in cognitive development.
Cognitive development can also be referred to as intellectual development.
The four stages of cognitive development as identified by Jean Piaget are
- Sensorimotor Stage: Birth through about 2 years, it entails the use of motor activity without using symbols. The activities at this stage are based on experiences, trial and error.
- Preoperational Stage: Ages 2 through 7, in this stage of cognitive development, imagination and memory are in the developmental stage. Children at this level are egocentric; they have no understanding that others may have difference experiences. Being able to read meaning to object is the main achievement of this stage.
- Concrete Operational Stage: Ages 7 through 11, child at this stage are less egocentric, they tends to think logically about concrete events which means they are more logical and organized in thinking and still very concrete.
- Formal Operational Stage: Ages 11 and older, this stage takes place during adolescence and it has to do with application of logic to abstract thought. At this stage, teens thinking become deep and are based on morals, ethical and social.
