The cost of maintaining a(n) ELDERLY inmate is much higher than costs associated with other incarcerated populations.

The main factor that increases the cost of maintaining an elderly inmate is the higher health care cost. Inmates aged 50 and above are considered elderly.

According to a news article I read online (USA Today dated July 10, 2013), the cost of caring for an aging and sick prisoner is around $68,270 per year. Almost twice the cost of an average younger inmate.
