This was the first defense mechanism that Freud learned and possibly the most significant. Repression is an insensible mechanism engaged by the ego to keep troubling or intimidating judgement from becoming aware. Views that are often suppressed are those that would outcome in emotional state of guilt from the sense of propriety. This is not a very positive protection in the long term since it includes forcing troubling wishes, thoughts or reminiscences into the insensible, where though hidden they will create apprehension.
