When he arrived to what we know today as the Bahamas, he encountered people that didn't speak his language but were friendly. He noticed that they were not experts in war and could not defend themselves so he saw them as an easy conquest. He took a few of them back to the king so they would learn the language, learn his religion and would eventually help him to conquer the new lands he had discovered.

He claimed that with just 50 men he could conquer that land and do whatever he wanted. What he was really attracted to was the gold that local people had on them and we know, the conquest that came after that was really a way to take away the resources of the native people back to  Europe.
