I believe the correct answer is D. The man is of old-age because all great philosophers in history have been elderly.
I don't think that Da Vinci had this in mind when he created this work of art. First of all, because not all philosophers in history have been elderly - there were some young ones, so this statement doesn't really make much sense as to why he would portray his character like that.
