Booker T. Washington was a former slave during his childhood, and he became one of the most important leaders of the former slave population of the Southern States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For Washington the education was a key factor to reach the freedom of African Americans and to overcome poverty. He also was one founder of the National Negro Business League and he achieved to collect money to help communities and to fight against segregation and discriminatory laws.
