A recent study of hot dogs show that they are responsible for causing colorectal cancer in 143,000 Americans a year and kills about 50,000 of them. Some studies link the cancer to nitrates found in hot dogs, sausages, bacon, ham, cold cuts and other processed meats cause genetic mutations in cells and cause cancer; while others are not sure if itâ€™s the nitrates, saturated fat or another ingredient. A number of groups want warning labels similar to those found on cigarettes. Prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and leukemia also have increased occurrences in people who eat processed meat everyday.
