According to USATODAY, “Famed singer, rapper and actress Lauryn Hill has been charged with failing to file three years of federal tax returns on more than $1.6 million in income, prosecutors in New Jersey said Thursday.
The 37-year-old artist, who gained fame as a member of the Fugees and then launched a solo career that included the multiple Grammy award-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was hit with three charges for alleged failure to file tax returns for 2005 through 2007.
A criminal information filed in U.S. District Court in Newark said Hill owns and operates four private corporations along with her entertainment career: Creations Music, Boogie Tours, L.H. Productions 2001 and Studio 22. Royalties from the recording and film industries make up her primary source of income, the information stated. According to court documents, in 2005 Hill received a total gross income in excess of $818,000; during 2006, she received $222,000; and in 2007, $761,000.
Each of the three tax charges against Hill carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Hill is scheduled to appear on the charges before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Shipp on June 29.
