Lauryn Hill Tax Sentencing Postponed Till May 6th

lauryn-hill-mugshotLauryn Hill is getting a small break in her efforts to avoid jail time. The Grammy winner’s sentencing date to address a three-year tax lapse has been postponed until May 6th. According to New Jersey’s “Star-Ledger,” the judge presiding over Hill’s case is giving the singer two weeks to pay 504-thousand-dollars in back taxes. Hill could face at least two years in jail if she doesn’t pay up by the May 6th deadline. The singer appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey on Monday. She’s charged with failing to report the one-point-eight-million-dollars in income she earned over the years 2005, 2006 and 2007. Hill pled guilty to the charge last year, blaming threats against her and her family as reason for not submitting her tax earnings to the federal government. In a lengthy blog post, the singer said she was forced to go “underground” to protect her family, although she did not give specific examples of what she needed protection from.

Hill recently asked the court for leniency in her tax case, suggesting probation instead of jail time. The singer offered that she could likely pay off her debt to the IRS much faster in the free world than she could if she was behind bars.
