Dr. Dre has cleared a violation hurdle in a marketing dispute with the International Olympic Committee. Officials ruled Friday that the hip-hop producer did not breach any guidelines by gifting his high-end headphones to a number of Olympic athletes. The IOC has strict rules to prevent what’s known as “ambush marketing” by unapproved vendors seeking free publicity from the Games. Officials became suspicious as they took note of an increasing number of athletes who were showing up at events wearing Beats By Dr. Dre headphones bearing their national colors.
A rep for east London’s Shoreditch House confirmed that the Beats brand had set up a collection point for invited athletes at the private members’ club. An IOC rep also says officials were aware of Dr. Dre’s offer to athletes from several nations but emphasized that it was important for Olympic teams to do their part to protect Olympic sponsors.
