End of an era? Karrine Steffans celebrated her 30th birthday in Atlanta with a party at JD’s nightclub, and she used the milestone to make a big announcement: she is done being ‘Superhead.’ FreddyO was in the building as Karrine addressed the crowd and let it be known that the nickname that made her famous is officially being retired. Turning 30 is a new chapter for everybody, and Karrine says she is ready to be known for much more than her past.
Karrine shook up the whole industry in 2005 with her bestselling memoir Confessions of a Video Vixen, which put her name — and plenty of other people’s names — in headlines everywhere. She followed it up with The Vixen Diaries last year, and her books have made her one of the most talked-about women in hip-hop, love her or hate her. The ‘Superhead’ name has followed her since her video vixen days, but Karrine insists that woman is in her past now.
The birthday bash brought out a crowd of Atlanta partygoers and industry folks to help her bring in the big 3-0, and Karrine was all smiles as she worked the room and took the mic. She was clear about what is next: more books, more business, and a future built on the Karrine Steffans name — not the one the streets gave her. Time will tell how the rebrand goes, but if her track record proves anything, she knows how to keep the people watching.
