Miles College Band 2009 Performs Beyonce “Ego”

If you know anything about HBCU football Saturdays, you know the game is only half the show. The Miles College Purple Marching Machine came into its matchup with Clark Atlanta ready to make a statement, and when the band broke into Beyoncé’s “Ego,” the stadium forgot all about the scoreboard. FreddyO was right there as the horns blared, the drums pounded and the dancers hit every count — a college band turning the hottest R&B record in the country into a full-blown halftime celebration.

Beyoncé is having a monster year. “I Am… Sasha Fierce” is still in heavy rotation, “Single Ladies” has everybody doing the hand wave, and “Ego” — especially that Kanye West remix — is one of those records that instantly changes the energy in a room. Hearing it through a Black college band is something else entirely though. The Purple Marching Machine stretches the groove out, lets the brass carry Beyoncé’s melody, and gives the drumline room to talk back, and the crowd is on its feet before the dancers even step forward.

That’s the beauty of our marching band culture in the South. Miles College, an HBCU in Fairfield, Alabama, has built its name on precision, power and showmanship, and squaring off against Clark Atlanta brings out the best in both schools. Every section wants bragging rights — trumpets screaming, tubas shaking the bleachers, snares cracking like lightning. This wasn’t background music between downs; this was a battle, and the Purple Marching Machine played like they came to Atlanta to win it.

Press play and turn it all the way up. From the first blast of the horns to the last pose, this is exactly why HBCU bands are the heartbeat of Black college football — nobody, and we mean nobody, does Beyoncé like a marching band with something to prove.
