Back in the early days of social media, I helped bring a whole lot of people onto Facebook. In this video, I tell the story of how it happened.
Before Everybody Was Online
It is hard to imagine now, but there was a time when most people had never heard of Facebook. It started in 2004 as a site for college students and opened up to everyone in 2006. Back then, MySpace was still king, and getting people to sign up for something new took work.
I have been documenting Atlanta online since 2005, starting with my first website and photo blog. Being early to the internet meant I was in a position to help a lot of people discover new platforms and connect with each other.
Why This Story Matters
Black users have always shaped internet culture, from the slang and memes to the trends everyone else picks up later. In this video, I share my part of that story and how I helped bring so many people onto Facebook in those early days.
Today, social media is how a lot of people find news, build businesses and stay connected to family. Looking back at where it started reminds me how far we have come.
