FreddyO family, let’s begin with prayer. Today has brought heartbreaking news to our community, and my thoughts are with the family and loved ones of a man who lost his life at Six Flags Over Georgia. Please join me in keeping them lifted in prayer during this incredibly difficult time.
According to reporting from WSB-TV, 11Alive and USA TODAY, the tragedy happened at approximately 3:58 p.m. today, Monday, October 12, when a man was ejected from the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell and fell. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Cobb County Police confirmed that one person died and several were injured; WSB-TV reported that four other people were injured and taken to a hospital. Witnesses told 11Alive that the man struck the ride multiple times during the fall.
The coaster came to a stop on its lift hill, and riders had to be evacuated down the stairway, four at a time. WSB-TV’s news helicopter captured the evacuation as it happened.
Goliath is one of the park’s largest rides, standing about 200 feet tall with a top speed of 70 mph, and it has been operating since 2006.
In a statement, Six Flags Over Georgia said it is deeply saddened by the loss and that its thoughts and condolences are with the guest’s family. The park said it is supporting affected guests and team members and is cooperating fully with local authorities’ investigation, adding that it will not share more details out of respect for the family’s privacy. Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said city officials were deeply saddened by the tragedy and offered condolences to the family.
The victim has not been publicly identified, and the cause of the incident is under investigation. This is a developing story.
Please keep this man’s family, friends, and everyone who was at the park today in your prayers. No one should ever have to receive a call like this. Prayers up, FreddyO family.
