The world has lost one of its most beloved captains. Sir Patrick Stewart — Captain Jean-Luc Picard to generations of Star Trek fans, and Professor Charles Xavier to X-Men fans everywhere — has died. He was 86.
Stewart died Wednesday, Oct. 28, at his home in Los Angeles, in the loving care of his wife, Sunny Ozell, following a brief journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His family announced his passing Thursday.
“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter,” his family shared in a statement — a peaceful goodbye for a man whose grace filled every room he entered.

Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, Stewart rose from the Royal Shakespeare Company to become one of the most respected actors alive. In 1987 he took command of the USS Enterprise as Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, defining thoughtful, principled leadership for a generation. In 2000 he became Charles Xavier in the X-Men films — the calm, compassionate heart of the Marvel universe. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2010, and his 2023 memoir, Making It So, became a bestseller.
His final on-screen role will be a gift to fans: Stewart returns as Charles Xavier one last time in Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18 — his ninth time in the role he made immortal.
Off screen, Stewart used his voice for people who needed one. Having grown up in a home marked by domestic violence, he spent years advocating for survivors. He also championed veterans’ mental health, refugees, and animal welfare — and melted the internet more than once with his beloved foster pit bulls.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Sunny, and his two children, Daniel and Sophie. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources.
Rest in peace, Captain. Thank you for teaching us to make it so.
