Diddy, Ricky Rozay, and Janelle Monae recently completed a photo shoot for Vibe’s September issue (July 28). In this issue, Diddy spoke on how he regretted giving Martin Bashir of Nightline an interview. The journalist pounded the mogul on lavishing his son with a Maybach for his 16 birthday.
“The whole thing about giving a Maybach to my son, that’s really like a racist question,” Diddy tells the mag. “You don’t ask white people what they buy their kids. And they buy ’em Porsches and convertible Bentleys, and it ain’t no question. It’s really a racist question and put things back in perspective with money and the way that people still look at you. And I’m not saying that consciously he’s a racist. But he probably don’t even realize that he would not ask Steve Jobs that. He would be like Steve Jobs has that money and that’s the gift his kid is supposed to get.”
“There were times in the interview when I had to give him an ultimatum. The questions weren’t being handled the right way. In hindsight, when I saw him, I shouldn’t [have] done the interview because I know the style of interview that he does,” Diddy said.
It’s rare that i ever agree with Diddy based on his character, and how he reflects himself to the public. Now eventhough, i wholeheartedly agree that a “Maybach” is a a much too extravagant gift for such a young boy, that is his child! And he can do what he feels like doing with “HIS” money. I also know that Black people internalize everything when it comes to race and that the guy bout didn’t know, consciously that the question would be perceived as racist. But I’m with Diddy on this one. Now sign a bish to your label as a writer already geesh!
