set up a ratio:

telephone pole = 18ft high / 21ft shadow

tree = x ft high / 14 ft shadow

18/21 = x/14

cross multiply 18 x 14 = 252
21 x x = 21x

x = 252 / 21

x = 12

the tree is 12 feet tall
