Atlanta has always been spoiled when it comes to R&B voices, but every once in a while the city gets a reminder of just how elite its own talent really is. That reminder comes courtesy of LaTocha Scott, the powerhouse soprano of Xscape, in a clip that is nothing short of breathtaking. No gimmicks, no studio tricks — just that God-given instrument doing what it was born to do. Press play and prepare to have your wig snatched, because this is singing in its purest form.
For anybody who came up on “Just Kickin’ It,” “Understanding” and “Who Can I Run To,” LaTocha’s voice was the lightning in the bottle — that church-bred, take-you-to-the-King soprano that could carry a ballad or ride a Jermaine Dupri groove with equal fire. Alongside Tamika Scott, Kandi Burruss and Tiny Harris, she helped Xscape sell millions of records and set the blueprint for every harmony-driven girl group that followed.
The timing of this moment could not be sweeter. After the group’s celebrated reunion — from their show-stopping return at the 2017 Essence Festival to their long-overdue honor at the BET Awards — Xscape proved to a whole new generation that they never lost a step. And LaTocha has been front and center through it all, reminding everybody why she was the voice that anchored those timeless classics. Fans have been begging for more solo vocal moments, and clips like this prove she can carry a stage all by herself.
