Now this is a voice that never left! We are opening up the FreddyO vault and taking it back to 595 North in Atlanta, where Nivea hit the stage and delivered a live performance of her classic ‘Complicated’ that reminds everybody exactly why she was one of the leading ladies of 2000s R&B. No big production, no tricks, just Nivea, a microphone and that voice doing what it has always done.
‘Complicated’ is the title track of her 2005 album, and the ladies still know every word. This is the same Nivea who gave us ‘Don’t Mess with My Man,’ ‘Okay’ with YoungBloodZ and Lil Jon, and ‘Laundromat’ alongside R. Kelly, a run of records that kept her all over the radio and the countdowns. Watching her work a room like this, trading energy with an Atlanta crowd that grew up on her music, is pure nostalgia in the best way.
There is a whole generation of R&B girls who studied singers like Nivea, and moments like this one show why. The runs are effortless, the tone is unmistakable, and she performs like somebody who never stopped loving the music, even while she stepped back to raise her family. Atlanta has always claimed her as one of our own, and this room full of fans singing right back to her proves the love never went anywhere.

Press play and take it back with Nivea, then tell us in the comments which of her classics you still keep in rotation. Around here, ‘Complicated’ will always be that record.
