Only in a room full of family could something like this happen. At Catherine Brewton’s brunch, with gospel greats and entertainment folks gathered around the tables, Kirk Franklin decided the moment needed a song — and he knew exactly who he wanted to sing it. Kirk called on Tyler Perry to stand up and sing, and the whole room erupted before Perry even got through the first line.
The song was Something About the Name Jesus, one of the defining records of Kirk Franklin’s career, and hearing Tyler Perry take it on — with Kirk right there directing, encouraging, and singing along — turned brunch into a full-on church moment. Perry is known for a lot of things, but standing up to sing in a room like that takes a different kind of boldness, and he delivered it with heart, humility, and a big smile.
Catherine Brewton’s brunch has a reputation for creating exactly these kinds of moments. The industry comes together to eat, fellowship, and celebrate, and before the plates are cleared, somebody ends up testifying. Kirk Franklin has spent three decades breaking down the wall between gospel and the mainstream, and Tyler Perry has built an empire telling stories rooted in faith — watching the two of them celebrate each other in front of their peers is Black excellence and Atlanta culture at its finest.
