Atlanta’s own Summer Walker is in a full-blown legal war with the labels behind her rise — and she is fighting on two fronts at the same time.
It started in August, when Walker told Interscope she was done. She sent a termination notice effective August 27, invoking California’s “seven-year rule” — the law that lets a person walk away from a personal services contract after seven years. Her deal, signed in 2017 as a joint venture between Interscope and Atlanta-based LVRN, called for five albums. She has delivered three: Over It in 2019, Still Over It in 2021, and Finally Over It this year.
Interscope hit back on October 9, suing her in Los Angeles County Superior Court for more than $50 million. The label says she still owes two studio albums and an EP, leaning on the 1987 amendment to the seven-year rule that lets labels sue for undelivered albums. Interscope says it filed to protect its contract before a 45-day deadline ran out — and that it remains hopeful the two sides can still reach an amicable resolution.
Then Walker fired her own shot: a lawsuit against LVRN for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and breach of contract. In her complaint, she claims the label withheld and diverted her money, charged excessive company expenses against her touring, recording, marketing, and merch budgets, sold merchandise using her name and likeness on Amazon without informing her or paying her, and ran a YouTube page in her name without her knowledge. She says that when the page was finally turned over to her, its historical data had been deleted and she never received the revenue it generated.
Walker is asking the court to declare her 2017 agreement void and unenforceable, along with compensatory and punitive damages. To be clear: these are her claims in a lawsuit, and they have not been proven in court. LVRN has not publicly responded yet.
