The horror-comedy Haunted Heist rolled into Atlanta for its premiere red carpet in July, and FreddyO was there on the carpet. The film marks Lil Rel Howery’s directorial debut.
What the movie is about
In Haunted Heist, four estranged friends reunite to pull off a $20 million job, only to find out the property they’re robbing is haunted. Howery stars alongside Tiffany Haddish, with King Bach, Karlous Miller and Brett Gelman also in the cast. The script is by Carl Reid, and the film was shot in Detroit.
An independent Black film in theaters
The movie first premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2025 and opened in theaters nationwide on July 24, 2026. Howery made it independently, and he’s been vocal about the business side of getting films like his onto big screens. He has encouraged Black creatives to build relationships directly with theater owners, arguing that theaters need both big franchise movies and independent films to thrive.
