Usher usually commands the stage, but his 48th birthday celebration gave him a chance to enjoy someone else’s performance.
The singer celebrated in New York City at Speakeasy Magick, where close-up magicians entertained a room filled with familiar faces from music, comedy and basketball.
According to HotNewHipHop, guests included Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Kevin Hart, Fabolous and Bun B. LeBron James and J.R. Smith also attended the gathering.
Footage from the celebration shows guests watching the magicians work, with Hart appearing especially surprised by a card trick. The intimate setting brought the entertainment directly to the guests rather than putting the birthday star behind a microphone.
For fans accustomed to seeing Usher deliver choreography, vocals and elaborate concert productions, the clips offered a different view: the entertainer relaxing and reacting alongside his friends.
The celebration brought together stars whose careers have helped shape several generations of entertainment. This time, the occasion was simply a birthday — and the shared experience of trying to figure out how a magician pulled off a trick.
