Atlanta, let us introduce you to a name you are about to hear a whole lot more: Drake. The Toronto kid everybody has been whispering about — the one who sings and raps, who came up on “Degrassi” and is now running with Lil Wayne’s Young Money crew — hit an Atlanta stage for the very first time back in 2008, and FreddyO had the camera rolling. Long before any arena talk, this is Drake raw, hungry and winning a brand-new city over one song at a time.
If you have “So Far Gone” on your iPod right now, you already know why the room is so locked in. That mixtape has been spreading like wildfire since it dropped in February — “Best I Ever Had” is taking over radio and the clubs, “Successful” with Trey Songz is everybody’s new favorite, and the ladies in the front row are singing every word right back at him. Drake doesn’t perform like a newcomer either. He works the stage, slows it down for the R&B side, then snaps right back into his bars like he has been doing this forever.
Atlanta is a tough crowd to win — this is the city that broke T.I., Jeezy, Ludacris and Outkast, and we can spot a star in about thirty seconds. So when this crowd stays on its feet, phones in the air, calling for more, that tells you everything. With Weezy in his corner and labels in a bidding war over his signature, Drake is clearly next in line, and the A got to see it up close before the rest of the world caught on.

Press play and remember this moment, Atlanta. Every superstar has a first show in the city that people talk about for years, and this is Drake’s — no big production, no gimmicks, just a young artist, a microphone and a crowd that knew it was watching something special.
