Fifty looks good on you, Tameka Scott. The Xscape songstress celebrated her 50th birthday party in true Atlanta fashion — surrounded by family, friends, and some of the most powerful voices in R&B and gospel, with FreddyO in the building to catch every note. When a member of Xscape throws a birthday party, it’s never just a party: it’s a concert, a reunion, and a celebration of a voice that has been part of the soundtrack of our lives for over thirty years.
The highlight of the night was the music, because at Tameka’s party, the guests don’t just show up — they sing happy birthday with their whole chests. Gospel powerhouse and radio favorite Darlene McCoy blessed the room, singer and actor Terrell Carter brought his smooth, church-trained vocals, Yanna sang the house down, and then KeKe Wyatt — a woman whose voice should be illegal in at least forty states — reminded everybody in attendance exactly who she is. When singers of this caliber are passing the mic at a birthday party, you know the birthday girl is loved, respected, and family to the culture.
It has been a big year for Tameka and Xscape, who hit the road this summer on The Queens of R&B tour alongside SWV, reminding a whole new generation how deep that catalog runs — Just Kickin’ It, Understanding, Who Can I Run To, and hit after hit. Away from the stage, Tameka has built a loyal following with her cooking and her keep-it-real personality, and the love in that room — from her sister LaTocha’s group legacy to longtime friends across Atlanta entertainment — showed just how many lives she has touched along the way.
