Wendy Williams is fighting back. After a wellness check and a mental capacity test, the talk show queen is pushing to end her guardianship.
Wendy has been under a court-ordered guardianship since May 2022, after Wells Fargo raised concerns to a New York judge about her ability to handle her own affairs. Her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, oversees her medical and financial decisions.
Wendy says she’s ready to take her life back. In court papers, she has said she has regained the capacity to live on her own, and she has complained about being stuck in a memory unit at her assisted living facility in New York City, where she can’t leave without permission. In March, she even tossed a note out of her window to photographers that read “Help! Wendy!!”
Her guardian’s side tells a different story. An attorney for Morrissey has said Wendy is getting excellent medical care and that false statements about her condition could hurt her. Meanwhile, fans have been rallying behind the #FreeWendy movement, and a lot of people are comparing her fight to Britney Spears’ conservatorship battle.
Update: As of August 2025, the guardianship was still in place after new medical testing, and her guardian asked the court to extend it.
