Movies on the beach in Jamaica? Say less. The Negril Universal Film Festival, formerly known as the Skylark Film Festival, runs October 8 through 11 at Skylark Negril Beach Resort on Seven Mile Beach.

This year’s lineup features 34 films from 13 countries, with open-air screenings at night. During the day, filmmakers can take master classes on funding, distribution, vertical filmmaking and how independent creators make money from their work.

On the screen

  • Opening night: a 25th-anniversary screening of Stephanie Black’s documentary Life and Debt.
  • A tribute to Jimmy Cliff, plus Storm Saulter’s Possession.
  • The Jamaican premiere of Reggae Girlz.
  • Closing night: the maternal health documentary Listen to Me, followed by a policy panel.

Filmmakers, would you submit your work here next year?
