R&B Legend Freddie Jackson Has Passed Away at 70

The R&B world lost one of its smoothest voices this week. Freddie Jackson, the Harlem-born singer whose love songs defined the sound of the 1980s, has died at 70. His family shared the news on social media and did not release a cause of death.

Jackson grew up singing gospel in a Harlem Baptist church before stepping into the spotlight with his 1985 debut album. Its lead single, “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” made him an overnight star, and “You Are My Lady” became a wedding and slow-dance staple for a generation.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Jackson kept making music, releasing new work as recently as 2019. He also lent his voice to the soundtrack of the animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven.

In their statement, his family remembered him as a kind and generous man whose music played in the background of so many love stories and celebrations.

Our prayers go out to his family, friends and fans. Rest in peace to a true legend.
