Whew, somebody come listen to this boy sing! Avery Wilson took on a sacred R&B classic, Tevin Campbell’s ‘Can We Talk,’ live, and FreddyO has the footage that will give you chills. No studio tricks, no safety net, just a microphone and a voice that seems to have no ceiling. From the first run to the final high note, Avery sang like he had something to prove.
The world first met Avery when he lit up The Voice stage as a teenager back in 2012, and the voice has only gotten more dangerous since. He has been quietly building a reputation as one of the most gifted vocalists of his generation, dropping his FYI EP last fall and going viral again and again with jaw-dropping live covers that singers twice his age would not attempt. Taking on Tevin Campbell, one of the finest voices R&B has ever produced, is a bold move, and Avery makes it look easy.
‘Can We Talk’ is holy ground for R&B fans. Babyface wrote the 1993 smash for Tevin’s I’m Ready album, and singing it live means every single note is exposed. Avery leans all the way in, flipping runs, stretching notes and hitting heights that had the whole room ready to shout. In the gallery below, catch him covering ‘Smile’ and showing off more of those epic vocal skills FreddyO has captured over the years.

Salute to Avery Wilson, a singer’s singer and one of the brightest young voices in the game. Press play and enjoy a masterclass, then tell us in the comments: did Avery do Tevin proud?
