Tamara Tunie finally has her Emmy. The “Beyond the Gates” star won Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series: Actress at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles.
The win came nearly 40 years after Tunie made her daytime debut in 1987 on “As the World Turns,” where she played attorney Jessica Griffin. On CBS’s “Beyond the Gates,” she plays Anita Williams Dupree, the strong matriarch of the wealthy Dupree family.
The sweetest moment of the night came when she dedicated the award to her mother, Evelyn Tunie, who is 92 and traveled across the country to be in the room. “I love you, Mommy. And this is for you,” Tunie said. She also gave honor to the Black actresses who paved the way before her, starting with Cicely Tyson.
It was a big night for the whole show. “Beyond the Gates” — the first new daytime soap in 25 years and the first centered on an affluent Black family — took home four Daytime Emmys in its very first year of eligibility. Co-star Ambyr Michelle also won Outstanding Emerging Talent.
Many fans know Tunie from her 23 seasons as medical examiner Dr. Melinda Warner on “Law & Order: SVU.” Congratulations, Tamara — well deserved!
