Angela Bassett has spent four decades proving Hollywood doesn’t get to decide her future. Now she’s sharing advice for anyone trying to make their own way.
Speaking with LA Times Studios on Oct. 21 during the 40th anniversary of AFI FEST, Bassett encouraged people to stay away from predictable choices and to be clear about why they say yes to something. Her advice in two words: “Expand yourself.”
She knows what it means to keep going. Bassett has been nominated for two Oscars and lost both — first for playing Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and again in 2023 for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” She was later honored with an honorary Oscar in 2024 for her body of work. She has also been known to turn down roles that didn’t feel right for her.
Today, she’s as busy as ever. Bassett voices the General, a golden eagle, in the stop-motion fantasy film “Wildwood,” which opened AFI FEST, and she continues to star on “9-1-1.”
Queen behavior, as always.
