Cynthia Erivo is about to step into one of the most powerful roles in hip-hop history. The Wicked star has been cast as Afeni Shakur — Tupac’s mother — in ‘Snoop,’ Universal’s upcoming biopic about the life of Snoop Dogg.
Afeni Shakur was a Black Panther activist whose strength, politics and love raised one of the greatest rappers of all time. She passed away in 2016, and her story is woven into everything Tupac became — so this casting had to be right, and Erivo is the kind of actress who does not miss.

The cast around her is stacked. Jonathan Daviss plays Snoop Dogg himself, Camron Jones plays Tupac, Myles Bullock plays Dr. Dre, Lauren London plays Snoop’s mother Beverly Tate, and Tre Hale plays Suge Knight — with Warren G, Nate Dogg and Kurupt also in the story.
Between Wicked and now this, Cynthia Erivo is on a run. Playing the woman who raised Tupac, in a movie about the West Coast’s rise, is the kind of role people will be talking about for a long time. We will be watching this one close.
