HISTORY is about to be made in Washington — and his name is Hakeem Jeffries!
After Democrats flipped the U.S. House of Representatives in Tuesday’s midterm elections, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become the FIRST Black Speaker of the House in American history. Let that sink in. In 237 years of the House, no Black lawmaker has ever held that gavel — until now.
Jeffries celebrated with supporters late Tuesday after the projections rolled in, declaring: “Today begins the great American comeback.”
The Brooklyn congressman, 56, is no stranger to making history. He’s led House Democrats since 2022, when he became the first Black politician to lead either party in the House or the Senate. Now he’s stepping all the way up — the Speaker runs the entire 435-member House, decides which bills live and which ones die, and stands second in line for the presidency, right behind the vice president.
Democrats will formally pick their candidate later this month, and the full House votes when the new Congress convenes on January 3, when Jeffries is expected to become the 57th Speaker in U.S. history, taking the reins after four years of Republican control.
One of his first pledges: fighting to reverse the deep Medicaid cuts pushed through last year — a promise that hits home for a whole lot of families, including plenty right here in Georgia, where voters just made history of their own on Election Night.
From Brooklyn to the Speaker’s office — congratulations, (soon-to-be) Mr. Speaker!
