Texas just did the unthinkable. Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, flipping the Texas governor’s mansion blue and becoming the first Latina governor in the state’s history.
It wasn’t close. Hinojosa ran up about 56% of the vote to Abbott’s 42%, ending Abbott’s run for a fourth term and handing Democrats their first Texas governor since Ann Richards in the early 1990s. No Democrat had won ANY statewide office in Texas since 1994 — until tonight.
Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin and a former school board president, rode a wave of frustration over prices, schools and an Abbott era that had lasted more than a decade. Abbott conceded on election night.
Texas flipping was the loudest bang on a historic Election Night 2026 that also flipped Georgia, Ohio and Iowa, made Keisha Lance Bottoms the first Black woman governor in U.S. history, and put Democrats on the verge of holding a majority of America’s governor’s offices for the first time in two decades.
