History was made in Atlanta last night as BET rolled out its very first Social Awards, live from Tyler Perry Studios, and FreddyO was all over it, from the arrivals to the red carpet to the interviews everybody will be talking about. The new show celebrates the stars the internet made, and our city was the perfect place to do it.
Hosted by Michael Blackson, the night honored the memes, moments and personalities that run our timelines every day. Among the faces in the building: social media star Jess Hilarious, whose rise from viral videos to a household name is exactly what this show is about, and Love & Hip Hop: Miami breakout Amara La Negra, who is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about women on television right now. From the carpet to the stage, the whole night felt like a family reunion for everybody who built their name online.
What made the Social Awards different is that it put internet culture on a major stage without watering it down. The fans voted, the culture showed up dressed to shut it down, and Atlanta once again proved it is the center of Black entertainment. If this first year is the blueprint, BET has a new franchise on its hands.
