Nobody in Atlanta does an album rollout like this. For the release of his new album I Am > I Was, 21 Savage turned a Decatur motel into Motel 21 — part trap museum, part listening party — and FreddyO was on the scene as the Slaughter Gang boss welcomed close friends and lucky fans inside for a first listen and a walk through the culture that raised him.
The concept is pure 21. Instead of a velvet-rope club night, he put the album inside a roadside motel on Glenwood Road in Decatur and dressed the rooms up as exhibits celebrating trap music and the East Atlanta streets behind it. It is a museum with a heartbeat — the art, the props, and the stories all point back to the world his music comes from, the same world he has been documenting since he broke through and never forgot once the plaques started coming.
And then there is the music. I Am > I Was is 21’s first solo album since Issa Album, fifteen tracks with heavyweight guests, and the listening session gave the room the first real taste of it the night before it hit the world. Everything about this moment says growth: the kid from the 6 Zone is moving like a mogul now, building experiences around the album instead of just dropping it — and doing it right here at home, for the city first.
