MJ showed out for his mama. Michael Jordan gave $10 million to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work in honor of his mother, Deloris Jordan, and the gift was announced on her birthday.
It is the largest gift the school has ever received. Its Global Social Development Innovation Center, which works on challenges facing young people around the world, now carries her name: the Deloris P. Jordan Global Social Development Innovations Center.
The money also backs the Jordan Family Scholars Program, which helps master’s students in social work pay for school. Ten scholars recognized at the announcement will each get $12,500. Students can also travel to Nairobi to work at the Kenya Women’s and Children’s Wellness Center, which Mrs. Jordan founded in 2010 to support survivors of abuse and gender-based violence.
This is not new for the Jordans. Thirty years ago, in 1996, MJ helped launch the Jordan Institute for Families at the same school, and his mother has served on its Board of Advisors for nearly four decades. In a recorded video, he told her how proud he was to honor her and told future social workers the world needs them.
That is how you honor your mother. What would you do to celebrate yours?
