The Tupac Shakur murder case has taken another shocking turn. Michael Sanft, the Las Vegas defense attorney who represented Duane “Keffe D” Davis in the most watched hip-hop trial in decades, has died at 54. Las Vegas outlets reported Sanft was found deceased at his home after passing Thursday night, November 5. Police sources consider the death natural — likely a sudden medical episode — and no official cause has been released.

Sanft, the lead trial attorney at SOS Injury Lawyers who tried more than 150 cases to jury verdict, took Keffe D’s case pro bono because he believed in his innocence — he even traveled to Compton to understand where his client grew up. The trial ended August 31 with Davis, 63, convicted of first-degree murder in the 1996 drive-by killing of Tupac; on October 13 he was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.
The timing is stunning: the defense filed its notice of appeal on October 30 — exactly one week before Sanft’s death — and no replacement attorney has been named, leaving the appeal’s future in question. Rest in peace to Michael Sanft, and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. 🙏🏽 This is a developing story.
