Atlanta gathered this weekend to say farewell to a woman who meant so much to so many. Family, friends and loved ones came together to celebrate the life of Precious Harris, the beloved big sister of T.I., in a home going filled with the things she loved most: family, laughter, stories and music. FreddyO was there as the Harris family honored a life that touched everyone in the room.

Fans across the country came to know Precious through T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle, where her warmth, her quick wit and her no-nonsense advice made her a favorite. To her family she was a protector and a rock, the big sister who kept everybody grounded and kept everybody laughing. The love in Atlanta for Precious runs deep because she always gave that love right back to her city and to everyone she met.

Since news of her passing last month, tributes have poured in from across the entertainment world, with friends sharing memories of her kindness and the way she could light up any room she walked into. This weekend’s celebration reflected that spirit, equal parts tears and joy, as loved ones shared their favorite Precious stories and leaned on each other the way she would have wanted.

FreddyO caught up with some of the city’s most talented roller skaters, and they put on an absolute show — spinning, dipping, gliding backwards and hitting dance routines in perfect rhythm, all without missing a beat. Roller skating is a way of life in the A, and this video is proof. These skaters make it look easy, but anybody who has ever laced up knows the years of practice, balance and pure swag it takes to move like this.

Atlanta’s skate culture runs deep. From legendary nights at Cascade to rinks all over the city, skating has always been where music, style and community meet on the hardwood. Generations of Atlantans grew up in the rink, and the tradition is alive and well — the footwork in this video, the trains, the routines and the freestyle moves are straight out of that classic ATL playbook, taken to another level. When the right song comes on and the floor gets moving together, there is nothing else like it. This is not a hobby, this is heritage.

What makes the clip so much fun is the joy. These skaters are performing, but they are also just having the time of their lives, feeding off each other’s energy and showing out for the camera. Atlanta’s Best Roller Skaters “Cascade Skating Ring”

If you want to see Atlanta culture in its purest form, pull up to Cascade on a Monday night! FreddyO was in the building at the Cascade Fun Center as the city’s best roller skaters took over the floor, gliding, spinning and dancing on eight wheels like they were floating on air. This is not your regular family skate night, this is a whole art form, and the A is leading the way.

Cascade Skating Rink out on Cascade Heights is sacred ground in this city. The same rink made famous on the big screen in the movie ATL has been the heartbeat of southwest Atlanta skating for generations, where everybody from the neighborhood kids to your auntie learned how to roll bounce. On adult nights the floor belongs to the serious skaters, with their own custom skates, their own crews and moves with names, sliding backwards and dipping low without ever breaking stride.

What makes Atlanta skating special is the style. It is part dance, part sport and all soul, moving to the R&B and old school records the DJ keeps spinning, every crew trying to out-style the next. People come from all over the South just to skate this floor and be part of this scene, because there is nothing else like it anywhere. This is the kind of Black Atlanta tradition that gets passed down from generation to generation, right here on the southwest side.

Family and friends came together to eat, laugh, dance and honor the woman at the head of the table, the one whose prayers and sacrifices sit underneath every bit of the Family Hustle empire the world sees today. Tip has never been shy about crediting his mama, and this celebration showed exactly why.

These days the Harrises are sharing their lives with fans all over again on T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle on VH1, and moments like this are the heart of the whole show. Behind the King of the South, behind Tiny and Xscape, behind all the grandbabies running around, there is Ms. Violeta, the original queen of this family. “Blaque” Sing – “808” Live Shamari DeVot, Brandi Williams & FreddyO

Talk about a throwback done right. Blaque is back on stage in Atlanta, and FreddyO was front and center as Shamari DeVot and Brandi Williams took it all the way back to 1999, performing their smash 808 live. Two decades after the song first hit, the voices are still in place, the harmonies are still tight, and the room ate up every single note.

If you came up on late-90s R and B, you already know what Blaque means. Mentored by TLC’s Lisa Left Eye Lopes, the trio burst onto the scene with 808 and Bring It All to Me and held their own in an era full of girl groups. Hearing Shamari and Brandi run 808 now, with grown-woman seasoning on those vocals, hits different — it is nostalgia, yes, but it is also proof. Real singers do not expire.

The timing is perfect, too. Shamari is having a whole moment as the newest peach in the Real Housewives of Atlanta mix, and instead of leaning only on reality TV, she is reminding everybody what got her here in the first place: that voice. And every time Blaque performs, the sisterhood on stage carries the memory of Natina Reed with them — gone too soon, never forgotten, and honored every time these ladies open their mouths and take it back to where it all started.

Now this is how you make history! Lee Daniels just announced he is developing a brand new superhero movie with a gay leading man, and he is putting social media star Dremon Cooper in the cape. The Empire creator shared the news himself in a video with Cooper right by his side, and the announcement is already shaking up Hollywood. A gay superhero leading his own film? It has never been done like this before, and Lee Daniels is exactly the man bold enough to do it.

Nobody can say Lee Daniels plays it safe. From Precious to The Butler to building Empire into the biggest show on TV, his whole career is about telling stories nobody else would touch and turning unknown talent into stars. Dremon Cooper knows something about that journey too — the young entertainer built a huge online following with his viral videos and personality, and now he is getting the call-up every internet star dreams about, straight from one of the most powerful directors in the business.

The timing could not be bigger. Superhero movies run the box office right now, with everybody from Marvel to DC packing theaters, but a Black gay superhero has never led one of these films. Daniels putting Cooper front and center is a statement: the next era of heroes is going to look like everybody. Fans are already debating online what powers he should have, who the villain should be and when cameras start rolling.
