Mimi Faust Talks Stevie J & Faith Evans Wedding & Karlie Redd Engagement

The Atlanta tea is piping hot this week, and Mimi Faust is not holding back! FreddyO caught up with the Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta star for an exclusive conversation, and Mimi gave us her real reaction to not one but two bombshells rocking her circle right now: her ex Stevie J marrying R&B legend Faith Evans in Las Vegas, and her castmate Karlie Redd announcing her engagement. If you think you know how Mimi feels, wait until you hear it from Mimi herself.

First, the wedding that stopped the timeline. News broke this week that Stevie J and Faith Evans tied the knot in a private Las Vegas ceremony, and the whole culture has been talking about it for two straight days. Stevie, the hitmaking producer behind some of Bad Boy’s biggest records, and Faith, the First Lady of Bad Boy and the widow of The Notorious B.I.G., have known each other for decades — but nobody, and we mean nobody, had a surprise Stevie-and-Faith wedding on their 2018 bingo card. For Mimi, this is personal: she and Stevie share years of history and a beautiful daughter, Eva, and their story played out in front of the whole world on Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. In this video Mimi talks about how she found out, what it means for their family and co-parenting, and where she stands today.

And because one headline is never enough in Atlanta, Karlie Redd chose this same week to announce that she is engaged, showing off her ring and sending the cast group chat into a frenzy. Karlie’s love life has been a front-and-center storyline on the show for years, so an engagement is a major new chapter — and Mimi, who has stood next to Karlie through plenty of cast drama, weddings and breakups, has thoughts on that ring, that timing and what happily-ever-after looks like in this circle. With season seven of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta just wrapping up, trust us, there is a lot to unpack.

One thing about Mimi Faust: she has lived her whole story in public, and in this conversation she is calm, clear and completely unbothered in a way that only comes with growth. Press play on the exclusive video above to hear her full take on Stevie and Faith’s wedding and Karlie’s engagement, browse the gallery for more FreddyO moments with the ladies of Atlanta, and then meet us in the comments: are you congratulating Stevie and Faith, congratulating Karlie — or are you, like us, still picking your jaw up off the floor?

  • T.I. Pays Respect To Gucci Mane & Shawty Lo As Trap Music Pioneers

T.I. Pays Respect To Gucci Mane & Shawty Lo As Trap Music Pioneers

Real recognize real. When it comes to the debate over who built trap music, T.I. has always said the foundation was laid right here in Atlanta — and he is giving credit where it is due, naming Gucci Mane and the late Shawty Lo as pioneers of the sound that is now running the whole music industry. FreddyO was there as Tip broke it all down.

Tip speaks from experience. With albums like Trap Muzik, Urban Legend and King, his Bankhead story helped carry the trap from the streets of Atlanta to the top of the charts. But as he explains in the clip, he was never the only one putting in work — Gucci was building the East Atlanta side of the movement with his own run of tapes and street anthems at the very same time, and the two of them pushed each other and the city forward.

Shawty Lo’s name still rings bells in this city. As the voice of D4L and the man behind “Dey Know,” the Bowen Homes rapper gave Bankhead a soundtrack and put his neighborhood on the map long before trap became a household word. Since his passing in 2016, the love for Lo in Atlanta has only grown, and Tip makes sure the world does not forget what he contributed to the culture and to the Westside that raised them both.

Hearing one Atlanta legend salute two others is what the culture is all about. Press play, hear it from T.I. himself, and then tell us — when you think about the pioneers of trap music, whose names have to be on that list?

  • Lil Duval Living My Best Life and smile b@tch
    ,

Lil Duval Living My Best Life and smile b@tch

If you have been anywhere near a cookout, a club or a timeline this summer, you already know the anthem. Lil Duval is back with the feel-good record of the summer, better known to everybody as the Living My Best Life song, and FreddyO caught the comedian turned chart-topper turning up as only he can. The whole spot was in a good mood, because Duval’s energy is contagious.

What makes the run so crazy is that Duval built his name on the comedy stage and on social media, where his living-my-best-life motto already had the culture in a chokehold. Teaming up with Snoop Dogg and Ball Greezy, he turned that motto into a full record, and now the song is climbing the charts, sitting in heavy rotation on urban radio while the video racks up millions of views.

Duval has deep ties to Atlanta too, from his stand-up roots to his years working the comedy circuit alongside the city’s biggest names, so seeing him win like this hits home. At a time when the timeline is full of bad news, a record that simply tells everybody to smile and live their best life is exactly what the summer needed. In the footage, the whole crowd is singing it back like a choir.

Press play and catch Lil Duval living his best life, and tell us in the comments how you are living yours this summer. Smile!

  • Rick Ross & Nick Cannon $3,000,000 Car Collection At Car & Bike Show
    ,

Rick Ross & Nick Cannon $3,000,000 Car Collection At Car & Bike Show

Now this is how you pull up to the car show. Rick Ross and Nick Cannon had everybody at the V-103 Car & Bike Show staring at a car collection worth a reported $3,000,000 — yes, three million dollars’ worth of whips all in one place. FreddyO was on the scene as the Boss and Nick showed Atlanta how the rich and famous really ride.

The V-103 Car & Bike Show is one of the biggest summer traditions in Atlanta, taking over the Georgia World Congress Center with custom cars, bikes, live music and thousands of fans. Rozay is famous for his own legendary garage — the man collects cars the way other people collect trophies — and Nick Cannon’s love for exotic rides is just as serious. Seeing the two of them together, walking the floor and comparing collections, was a moment all by itself.

Ross stays busy building his empire far beyond the music, between his restaurant moves, his business ventures and Maybach Music still putting in work, while Nick Cannon is booked and busy as ever with Wild ‘N Out and everything else on his plate. But put two car lovers in a building full of horsepower and they turn into kids again — popping hoods, talking paint jobs, and stunting for the cameras like it is their first time.

Press play above and take the tour of that $3,000,000 collection with Ross and Nick. Then hit the comments and tell us: if you could take just ONE of those whips home, which one are you driving off in?

  • T.I., YFN Lucci, Kat Williams, Lil Duvall, Christian Combs, & More 2018 V-103 car & Bike Show
    ,

T.I., YFN Lucci, Kat Williams, Lil Duvall, Christian Combs, & More 2018 V-103 car & Bike Show

If you were looking for the whole city of Atlanta in one place, the 15th Annual V-103 and WAOK Car & Bike Show was it. The whips were shining, the bikes were loud, and the stage stayed stacked all day — and when T.I., YFN Lucci, Katt Williams, Lil Duval, and Christian Combs are all on the bill, you already know FreddyO had to be front and center with the cameras rolling.

The Car & Bike Show is a summer tradition in this city for a reason. Families pull up for the custom cars and motorcycles, then stay for a lineup that reads like a who’s who of Atlanta culture. Lucci had the crowd in his pocket, Christian Combs brought that young, hungry energy his father would be proud of, and every time the hosts cut to the lot, somebody else was showing off a paint job that looked like it cost more than a house.

And because this is Atlanta, the stars were not just on stage — they were everywhere. Tip moving through the crowd like the mayor he unofficially is, Katt Williams and Lil Duval keeping everybody within earshot laughing, fans getting photos they will be bragging about all year. This is what V-103 does better than anybody: one stage where the city’s legends, its new school, and its comedians all share the same July sunshine.

Press play above and relive the whole day — the performances, the people, and the machines — then keep scrolling for more FreddyO exclusives from the show. If you missed it this year, let this be your warning to pull up early next time.

  • YFN Lucci’s Daughter Can Dance — Reginae Carter Spotted at V103 Car & Bike Show
    ,

YFN Lucci’s Daughter Can Dance — Reginae Carter Spotted at V103 Car & Bike Show

The V103 Car & Bike Show shut down the Georgia World Congress Center this weekend, and the star of the day might have been the smallest one there. YFN Lucci’s baby girl stole the show showing off her dance moves, while Reginae Carter was also spotted at the annual Atlanta event. FreddyO was on the scene as the city came out for the cars, the bikes and the stars.

Lucci has been on a run all year off the strength of his debut album Ray Ray From Summerhill, and his hit Everyday We Lit is still ringing off in clubs across Atlanta. But at the car show, the proud dad happily took a back seat to his daughter, who clearly did not get those moves from nowhere. The crowd gathered around as the little dancer did her thing, and Lucci was right there smiling like only a daddy can.

Reginae Carter, the daughter of Lil Wayne and Toya Wright, also pulled up to the show, which has become a must-attend summer tradition in the A. Between Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta and her growing brand, Reginae is building her own lane, and her rumored situation with Lucci had everybody at the show talking. The cars were shined up, the bikes were lined up, and Atlanta’s own turned the event into one big family reunion.

Check out the footage from this year’s V103 Car & Bike Show, and let us know whose ride, and whose dance moves, won the day!

  • Originator of Wholefood’s Chantilly Cake ‘Bywater Bakery’ New Orleans
    ,

Originator of Wholefood’s Chantilly Cake ‘Bywater Bakery’ New Orleans

FreddyO took the show on the road to New Orleans, and you already know we had to eat. Tucked into the Bywater neighborhood sits Bywater Bakery, the beloved local spot known far beyond the neighborhood as the home of the original Chantilly cake — yes, the same berry-and-cream sensation that made the Whole Foods version a nationwide favorite started right here, with the baker who created it.

If you have never had a real Chantilly cake, understand what we are talking about: light, tender layers of cake, clouds of mascarpone Chantilly cream, and fresh berries all through it — strawberries, blueberries, raspberries — finished so pretty you almost hate to cut it. Almost. One bite explains why people drive across New Orleans, and order it from across the country, for birthdays, weddings, and every celebration in between. This is not a copy of a famous cake. This is the original kitchen it came from.

But Bywater Bakery is a full neighborhood bakery, not a one-cake wonder. On any morning you will find locals posted up with coffee, fresh pastries, breakfast plates, and whatever the kitchen is proud of that day, in a colorful, art-filled space that feels like the Bywater itself — creative, welcoming, and proudly New Orleans. It is the kind of place where the counter staff knows the regulars, visitors get treated like neighbors, and everything coming out of the case is made with real love.

Press play above and take the full tour with FreddyO — step inside Bywater Bakery, hear the Chantilly cake story from the source, and see what else is coming out of that kitchen — then keep scrolling for more FreddyO food favorites. Have you had the original? Talk to us in the comments.

  • New Orleans Soul Food Spot ‘Melba’s Poboys’
    ,

New Orleans Soul Food Spot ‘Melba’s Poboys’

If you ever find yourself in New Orleans hungry at just about any hour, there is a spot on Elysian Fields Avenue that the locals swear by — Melba’s Po’boys. FreddyO pulled up to the neighborhood favorite, and from the moment you walk in, you can smell exactly why the orders stay flying out of the kitchen and the tables stay full in the Crescent City.

This is real New Orleans soul food, the kind that sticks to your ribs. We are talking Po’boys piled high on that good French bread — fried shrimp, catfish, roast beef with gravy — all dressed the way a Po’boy is supposed to be dressed. Then there is the gumbo, the red beans and rice, fried chicken, mac and cheese, bread pudding and all the Southern sides that make you want to order one of everything and worry about it later. Nothing fancy, nothing watered down, just big flavor the Louisiana way.

What makes Melba’s special is that it feels like home. It is a true neighborhood spot where everybody comes through — families after church, workers on break, second-line crowds, and visitors who heard about it and had to see for themselves. The place serves the community around the clock, and on a summer weekend in New Orleans, with the city still buzzing from festival season, there is no wrong time to slide through for a plate and a cold daiquiri to wash it down.

Press play and come hungry, because FreddyO is taking you inside one of the best soul food stops in the Big Easy. New Orleans, we want to hear from you — what is the one plate at Melba’s that everybody has to try on their first visit? Drop it in the comments and put us on game.

How To Start a Podcast – Kid Fury & Crissle West from “The Read”

Everybody wants a podcast these days, but who better to learn the game from than two people who actually built one from nothing? Kid Fury and Crissle West of “The Read” sat down with FreddyO to talk about how to start a podcast — and keep one alive. No gatekeeping, no fluff, just real talk from the duo who turned two friends, two microphones and a whole lot of opinions into one of the most successful podcasts in the culture.

If you listen to “The Read” every week — and the numbers say a whole lot of you do — you already know the formula: Kid Fury and Crissle deliver pop culture shade, read listener letters that will have you crying laughing, and somehow still find time to talk honestly about mental health, growing up and protecting your peace. Since launching back in 2013 with the Loud Speakers Network, the show has grown into sold-out live shows and a devoted fanbase that treats new episodes like a weekly holiday.

So their advice for anybody trying to start a podcast in 2018 is worth writing down. Start with what you have, be consistent even when the downloads are small, protect your friendship and your business, and don’t try to copy anybody else’s show — the audience can always tell. Atlanta creators, pay special attention: this city is full of voices with something to say, and the podcast world is wide open for the next show with real chemistry and a real point of view.

Press play, take notes, and then go create something. The next big voice in podcasting might be sitting right here in Atlanta — and when it pops, just remember Kid Fury and Crissle told you exactly how to do it first.

  • XSCAPE talks leaving the music Industry at ESSENCE INTERVIEW 2018
    ,

XSCAPE talks leaving the music Industry at ESSENCE INTERVIEW 2018

Essence Festival weekend in New Orleans always brings the legends out, and this year FreddyO caught up with the ladies of Xscape backstage for a real conversation about the road they have traveled — including the years they walked away from the music industry altogether. Kandi, Tiny, LaTocha and Tamika have lived the highs and the lows of this business in front of the whole world, and they are not holding back.

Think about the run: four Atlanta teenagers out of the College Park talent-show circuit, discovered by Jermaine Dupri, and by 1993 their debut changed the sound of girl-group R&B. The albums, the number ones, the platinum plaques — and then, at the height of it, the group went their separate ways. In this interview the ladies open up about what that time away really looked like, the solo chapters, the songwriting money, the reality shows, and how stepping back helped them understand their own value.

That is what makes this reunion era mean so much to the fans. Since getting back together last year, Xscape has sold out arenas on their big reunion tour, brought their story to television, and reminded a whole new generation why those harmonies still hit like they did in the nineties. Standing in New Orleans, the capital of Black music celebration this weekend, the message is simple: the industry tried to count them out, and these four women from Atlanta are still standing, still singing, still booked.

Press play and hear it from the ladies themselves — the real story of the break, the make-up and the music. Then tell us in the comments: what is the one Xscape record that still shuts the whole party down every single time?
